Segment A
US 17 AND MAIN ROAD IMPROVEMENTS — BEES FERRY ROAD TO RIVER ROAD
Project Overview and Status
Main Road Corridor Segment A begins at Bees Ferry Road and continues along Main Road across US 17, ending at the intersection of River Road and Chisolm Road.
The project includes widening Main Road from Bees Ferry Road to River Road, constructing a new interchange flyover at US 17 and Main Road, and constructing a roundabout at Main Road and River/Chisolm Roads. The project also includes the addition of a shared-use path on the Limehouse Bridge and extension of the West Ashley Greenway to Bees Ferry Road.
A design-build contract was awarded to Archer-United-Banks Joint Venture (AUBJV) on September 10, 2024, for Main Road Segment A. Construction began in early 2025 and is anticipated to achieve substantial completion in late 2028. Right-of-way acquisition is currently underway and will continue through 2025.
Project Purpose
The primary purpose of the project is to:
- Reduce congestion/ improve capacity at the intersection of US 17 and Main Road
- Increase capacity on Main Road from Bees Ferry Road to River Road/Chisolm Road
The secondary purpose of the project is to:
- Provide opportunities for bicyclists and pedestrians to travel throughout the project area
- Provide drainage and other improvements to lessen impacts to Main Road during significant storms
Quarterly Construction Updates
Project update meetings will be held each quarter throughout construction. These meetings will be advertised in advance and will provide the public with an update on the construction status and an opportunity to ask questions.
Notable Project Improvements

New Interchange – US 17 at Main Road
A new interchange with flyover off ramps will be constructed from the north and southbound directions of US 17 to Main Road, and a Main Road spur bridge will be added over US 17. Construction of the new interchange began in April 2025.

Main Road/River Road/Chisolm Road Roundabout
A roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of Main/River/Chisolm Roads to improve safety and operational efficiency of the intersection. Construction is anticipated to begin in fall 2025.

Main Road Widening
Main Road will be widened from one lane to two lanes in each direction from US 17 to the River Road/Chisolm Road intersection. The existing bridge over the CSX railroad will be replaced, and the existing Limehouse Bridge over the Stono River will be restriped to accommodate two travel lanes in each direction, plus a shared-use path. Construction of the CSX bridge will begin in spring 2026.

Shared Use Path
A nearly 3-mile long, 12-foot wide shared-use path will be constructed to improve pedestrian safety and provide unprecedented regional connectivity, tying into existing paths on Bees Ferry Road, Glenn McConnell Parkway, and the West Ashley Greenway. On April 8, 2025, Council authorized Public Works staff to pursue a retrofit of the existing Limehouse Bridge to allow for bike and pedestrian access across the Stono River.
